Wangari Maathai

I admit that I became aware of the work of Wangari Maathai, founder of the Greenbelt Movement (which has planted some 30 million trees since 1977 to prevent soil erosion in Kenya) and Nobel Peace Prize winner, later than some of the other people presented here. But since then, whenever I have heard her speak—connecting concern for the environment so eloquently to poverty reduction, women's rights, and sustainable development—she has been truly inspirational. Speaking about the Millennium Development Goals at last year's Clinton Global Initiative meeting, Maathai asserted that without protecting the environment, none of the other goals can be sustainably reached.
