While natural gas is a fossil fuel, the Eco Up! can also be powered by biogas, and at least natural gas is a cleaner burning and less carbon-intensive fuel than gasoline or diesel.

Under the hood is a newly developed three-cylinder gasoline engine with 999 cc displacement (EA211 engine series). The natural gas version produces its 50 kW output at 6,200 rpm and reaches its maximum torque of 90 N·m (66 lb-ft) at 3,000 rpm. It's not a race car, but it doesn't pretend to be.
