Mountain bikes were always intended for riding off-road, where their fat tires and squat weightiness are practical.
But the mountain bike craze of the 90's had nearly everyone coveting this style, with its nubbly tires, cushioning forks, and ramrod-straight handlebars, and many people still default to it. It may be the biking experience you grew up with, but unless you are going off-road (or want to look it), you might not need this bike.
