Electric vehicles have come a long way in the last few years, steadily gaining acceptance as a practical and sustainable form of transportation. This is especially true in cities, where most trips are short and space is at a premium. That's where the electric scooter comes in: Small, quick and zero-emissions, these vehicles are making a real dent in the automotive market.
And the auto industry is taking note: BMW, Honda, and VW all have electric scooters in production. These nine e-scooters -- either already on the market, or are on their way -- stand out from the pack.
The BPG Uno IIIBPG Motors'
Uno is without a doubt the most eye-catching and original electric scooters on the market. Called the "world's first real transformer
," the Uno can ride as a regular scooter, or fold up and balance on its back wheels, like a Segway
In "unicycle" mode, the Uno's turning radius drops to just three feet, so you can take it just about anywhere. The third generation Uno III will be available in early 2012, for between $5,000 and $7,500.
