The VW XL1 has been in development for many years, first known as the 1-Liter Car because of the amount of fuel that is used per 100 kilometers, and later redesigned as a diesel-hybrid that got 170 MPG US. This latest iteration is called the XL1, and it appears to be the best one yet: The powertrain is still diesel-hybrid, but it now allows the batteries to be recharged by plugging in, and this brings fuel consumption to an impressive 0.9 liter/100 km or 261 MPG US.
