A car that runs on anything from walnut shells to wood chips? That is the power of gasification. Gasification proved viable during WWII, when typical fuels were severely rationed. As fuel prices climb in the wake of peak oil, gasification may once again be the ticket to drive. With gasification, any solid, carbon-based material can be converted to a clean-burning, carbon neutral fuel.

With this DIY trash-burning Honda Accord, the vendors of the Gasifier Experimenters Kit (GEK) have proved that gasification is feasible. Now all that's needed is a little design adjustment so that the car's "private parts" don't have to hang out of its trunk.
