Belo Monte Dam is Brazil's Shame, Undermines Nation

A good editorial on Brazil's Belo Monte dam over this past weekend by Rhett Butler from Mongabay. Hits what many people no doubt feel, that Brazil has made some great environmental progress in some areas, but the approval of this project very nearly cancels all of that out.

Butler writes:

Belo Monte undermines Brazil's standing as a global leader on the environment. Recent gains in demarcating indigenous lands, reducing deforestation, developing Earth monitoring technologies, and enforcing environmental laws look more tenuous with a project that runs roughshod over indigenous rights and the environment...With Belo Monte, I'm no longer certain Brazil is the model to emulate.
