Dust storms occur around the world when wind kicks fine dirt, sand, or dust particles into the air.

These particles can form massive clouds that travel hundreds of miles. Though such storms occur naturally in arid places, there is evidence that poor management of farmland has increased the size and frequency of these storms -- to the point that research indicates that the Earth is twice as dusty as it was a century ago.
