Linz Has Recycled Hotels All Over Town

Linz, Austria is this year's European Capital of Culture, along with Vilnius, which gives small cities a chance to show off their unique charms. One of them has to be the Pixel Hotel, an unusual accommodation designed by architects and artists that offers "holidays in urban space" around town.

The hotel "rooms" are housed in off-beat locales such as a trailer bought on eBay (pictured), a river tugboat, a former soup kitchen and an industrial site (this one comes with a bicycle). Plus an old stables and an art gallery. Not your usual hip hotel.

The garden room is in a former working-class flat with a storefront forming a spacious hotel room and a garden designed to provide privacy from inquisitive glances through the shop window. A sound & image installation tells the history of how things used to be when the flat had no bath and the residents had to go to a nearby bathhouse to wash.

This hotel room is in the middle of an art exhibition. The art on the walls is for sale and the "bed" is designed by the artist too....

The sweetest is in an old stables. The top floor is a tiny room, just 1.5m high, perfect for a child's hideaway. There are two rooms in the restored cabins of a 1955 tugboat moored in the harbour. Pixel Hotel Via : Guardian
