This is a bit tangential to the environment, but the website Distance to Mars provides a great reminder of just how small and isolated the Pale Blue Dot that we call home truly is. Looking at the distance to Mars, our next-door neighbor on the astrological scale, you can't help but feel small. I don't think this sentiment has ever been put better than by Carl Sagan, so here it is again:
