Best of TH: Sustainable Retailers, Part I

TreeHugger is all about making all of our lives a little bit greener. Call it what you will: eco-friendly, environmentally-sensitive, sustainable, resource-efficient; our job is to make this lifestyle easy, fun and even a little hip. Though we aren't advocates for unchecked consumerism, we recognize that people of the world need stuff to live, and we want everyone to know where to get better stuff to promote this lifestyle that we champion so tirelessy. That said, here is installment one of four of the best of sustainable retailers. All of these retailers are accessible online, so readers around the globe can get their hands on the good stuff they've got; those readers in New York City will also be glad to note that all of today's retailers have showrooms and/or retail locations right in the city. Without further ado, we're pleased to present Vivavi, IIKH, 3R Living and The Future Perfect. As with the best of sustainable designers, to be sure your favorite is included, leave it in the comments section below.Vivavi provides a wide variety of household and office beautification products, from furniture for living, dining and sleeping to office wares for working and sitting to goods for accessorizing and cleaning. To be sold by Vivavi, merchandise must be beautifully designed with attention to quality and function while simultaneously minimizing environmental footprint and promoting human and planetary health. Vivavi is proud to be a member of 1% For The Planet, an alliance of businesses that donate 1% of all sales to non-profit, non-governmental environmental organizations. Shop online, or go see their sustainable smorgasbord at the new showroom open in Greenpoint, Brooklyn.

IIKH seeks to help people live a simple, stylish and sophisticated life while also being in balance with the world. Specializing in healthy products for the body, home, kitchen and even little TreeHuggers, IIKH encourages the incorporatation of more eco-friendly decisions into everyday lives. This philosophy extends to the West Chelsea store, which features refurbished concrete, low V.O.C. paints and custom-designed fixtures crafted from reclaimed and rapidly-renewable woods and eco-friendly resin. In addition to developing partnership programs with local schools and non-profit organizations, IIKH is proud to support the Natural Resources Defense Council; they firmly believe that by making a difference in their customers’ lives, they can make a difference in the world.

3R Living specializes in "future friendly" home decor and lifestyle products. The products, found both in the store and online, are carefully selected with the principles of reducing waste, reusing unwanted or discarded materials, and recycling in mind. Reduce. Reuse. Recycle: 3R. They favor manufacturers and artisans who dedicate their talents to creating clever, modern, and earth-affirming products out of unwanted everyday items. In addition, 3R looks for fairly-traded products and those made from organic ingredients, encouraging manufacturers to use environmentally-friendly packaging and sustainable manufacturing techniques. They sport an in-store recycling center that accepts batteries, cell phones, ink cartridges, CDs and their cases, hand-held electronics, and crayons, so it's easy enough to get some great sustainable stuff and still leave with less than you came with.

The Future Perfect showcases the work of up-and-coming home-furnishings designers, most of them from Brooklyn. Owner David Alhadeff chooses products based on what he calls "explorative good ideas" and "environmental sustainability," and they're all progressive and fresh and even a bit edgy. The best way to experience the wares is to go browse the store in Williamsburg; either way, there is always trend-watching and cool-hunting aplenty to be done at The Future Perfect.
