Grist Readers Pick Their Favorite Spots for a Sandwich

One afternoon in the 18th century, the story goes, the Earl of Sandwich asked his servant to bring him "bits of cold meat" between bread. It wasn't the first time such a meal had been requested—and the Earl certainly had not come up with the idea—but the scene was documented by curious historian and lunch orders "the same as Sandwich" have been made ever since.

So where do the eco-minded readers of Grist go when they want something placed between bread?Grist writes:

We asked readers to nominate their favorite sustainable, locally owned sandwich shops -- the ones sourcing their ingredients directly from nearby farms and turning them into "consistently and mind-blowingly good sandwiches," as Grist's Tom Philpott put it.
