Icebergs make a slow journey when at sea, but it seems like a flash when compared to the entire length of their lives. The process began with the formation of glaciers, which happened around 1000 BC. Once the glacier was heavy enough, it slowly moved downhill, until it reached the coast. Eventually, the glacier calved into the ocean, giving birth to icebergs. From there, the floating chunks of ice only last about three years in the Northern Atlantic.
