RAVPower's 15W solar charger offers affordable portable power (review)

Looking for an affordable way to keep your gear charged up while off the grid, without spending a lot of cash? This low-cost solar charger fits the bill.

The rapidly growing solar charger market has yet another entry, this time from RAVPower, a maker of laptop batteries, external battery packs, and AC adapters, in the form of a low-cost folding 15W solar charger that costs less than $60 USD.

The RAVPower 15W solar charger, which weighs in at 24 oz (680g), features dual USB ports for charging two devices at the same time from the sun's energy, and folds up to about the size of a slim book. The device, which is bound together with a sturdy polyester "canvas," measures 10.25" x 7.5" x 1" (260mm x 190mm x 25mm) while folded up, and opens up to 31.9" (810mm) long when in use.

The unit has four grommets for hanging it up (and comes with four small carabiners to assist with securing it), a velcro-closure pocket for holding gadgets, cords, or accessories, and a rugged weather-resistant cover built to stand up to daily use. The solar charger also features what the company calls their iSmart technology, which not only allows you to charge two devices at once, but which also automatically matches the charging current to the device, so a tablet will receive a 2A charge, while a smaller device will receive a 1A charge.

Here's my video review of the RAVPower 15W dual-port solar charger:

The 15W solar charger is available from RAVPower's Amazon store for $56.99 (with free shipping), and more information about the company's other products can be found on the website.

[Disclosure: RAVPower sent me a review unit to evaluate, but all opinions and/or errors in this post are mine alone.]
