Jessica Velasquez's "Bike in Style" Prototypes Hit NYC's Summer Streets

From concept to prototype, Fashion Institute of Technology student Jessica Velasquez's prize-clinching designs for LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton's Bike in Style challenge are one step closer to amping up the style quotient of pedal-pushers everywhere.

At a press conference held this morning by the New York City Department of Transportation to officially pre-launch Summer Streets 2009, of which LVMH is a main sponsor, the luxury goods maker unveiled mockups of Velasquez's jacket, poncho, and bag.

LVMH worked with the Mayor's Fund to Advance New York City, the DOT, and FIT to create the Bike in Style challenge, in which student designers from FIT were asked to create chic, practical, and affordable bike gear. The DKNY division of LVMH-owned Donna Karan International mentored the students and developed prototypes of the winning entries.

Summer Streets, which debuted last year, closes a 6.9-mile route from the Brooklyn Bridge to Central Park to cars for New Yorkers to run, bike, walk, and frolic on three Saturday mornings in August, starting this Saturday, followed by the 15th and 22nd.
