Beauty Products Get Cradle-to-Cradle Paperboard Packaging

Beauty buffs can get green and gorgeous with less plastic in the mix with a new 100 percent paperboard packaging. Made by the Chicago Paper Tube & Can Company—and not to be confused with Varden's Ecopak—the EcoPak can directly house Shea butter, balms, solid perfumes, and oil-based products, without resorting to plastic or glass.

EcoPak was honored this past week with the 21st DuPont Awards for Packaging Innovation's Noteworthy Accomplishment Award and it's easy to see why: The paperboard is made from up to 95 percent Forestry Stewardship Council-certified recycled materials, 80 percent of which comes from post-consumer content. In assembling the containers, water-based glues are used, along with soy inks for printing. Plus, the container itself is biodegradable and can be recycled, something that tends to be a tricky proposition with polypropylene plastics.
No pollutants are introduced into the air, water, or waste stream in the production process, according to the Chicago Paper Tube & Can Company. Does this sound too good to be true? We want to believe.
