Riding in Place to Fight Breast Cancer

How would you react if you lost your mother to breast cancer? If you are Jonathan Cane, you'd organize a virtual-cross-country bicycle race in the storefront on one of Manhattan's busiest streets.
Starting on Tuesday, May 26, at 11 a.m., a team of amateur bicyclists will set out to complete a virtual ride across the United States inside the front window of JackRabbit Sports, located at 42 West 14th St., between 5th and 6th Avenues, in Manhattan. Proceeds from the 3,000-mile effort, named Race Across the Window, will benefit the Young Survival Coalition (YSC), the premier international organization dedicated to the critical issues unique to young women and breast cancer. They expect to complete the in-place course by Tuesday June 2, 2009.
Loss into Discovery
Jonathan Cane, of City Coach in Brooklyn, came up with the idea after he lost his mom to the cancer. As an elite triathlete and coach, Cane wanted to do something unique and visible as a charity event in her honor. So he got eight full-time riders and special guests to participate in the contest. If you get a chance to stop by, you’ll can see their progress on a computer-controlled cycling simulators. Each cyclist will ride a 3-hour shift, and shifts will run 24 hours each day until the team reaches 3,000 miles. The team includes local elite and weekend athletes, as well as Lee Silverman, owner of JackRabbit Sports, and Steve Cody, local comedian and co-CEO of Peppercom Strategic Communications along with Cane and others.
And the Winner is
Cane hopes to raise awareness and funds for young women diagnosed with breast cancer. Donations can be made in the shop or online. Through cycling, Cane is displaying, literally, powerful message about putting hope into motion...even if that motion is all in one place!
