Greener Gadgets 2009: Saul Griffith on Climate Change and the Amount of Renewable Energy Needed to Prevent It (Video)

Saul Griffith led off Greener Gadgets 2009 with one of the best 40 minute explanations of why (to use his words) we're all a bunch of "planet fuckers" and what we can do to change that in terms of our energy usage, both personally and societally.

It's some of the same info he presented recently at Compostmodern, but if you saw that clip this one goes further into the industrial transformation that will be needed (part 1 is above, part 2 after the jump):

One of the most important points Griffith makes is that the sort of commitment and industrial transformation needed really isn't like the 'moon shot' approach suggested by some, but more like the retooling that the United States saw during World War 2: A massive, societal shift towards concentrating on making and installing carbon-neutral energy sources.

Another point I particularly like is the idea that Coke and Pepsi could retool by going back to their original business model of shipping concentrated syrup and sweetener around rather than the bottled finished product, and then using their factories to produce solar power equipment.
