Pedestrian-Friendly Improvements Coming to NYC's Herald and Times Squares

While not quite as radical an idea as making all of New York's 42nd Street pedestrianized and get a light rail system, a new pilot program to turn sections of the Times Square and Herald Square into pedestrianized zones is worth checking out:
Under the plan "Green Light for Midtown", the some of the criss-crossing streets at both locations will be turned into outdoor plazas. The goal is the address vehicle congestion in the area by simplifying the flow of traffic, as well as improve pedestrian safety in both locations. The changes are similar to the ones already completed around the Flatiron building and Madison Square Park. Check out the concept images:
