According to data provided by Wall Street Journal , in the story Consumers Cut Food Spending Sharply , the average American diet is a bit more veggy of late, and also wears a smaller shoe size on its carbon foot. No credit due to TreeHugger posting or PETA preaching. It's happening because money is tight, because fuel was very costly for shipping, and because foods that are grain-intensive to produce went way up after last year's diversion of a big chunk of the corn crop to ethanol production.
Primary causative factors: Iowa primary elections, US consumer excesses, GM, Chinese growth in oil demand, and Wall Street.
