Electric Cars from the Past, Present, and Future
Transportation plays a major role in our lives. We would all like to keep the benefits that it brings us while getting rid of the negative side effects (global warming, air pollution, etc). Walkable cities, public transit, and cycling are all part of the solution, but automobiles will be with us for the foreseeable future, so we need a car revolution. Here are some electric cars (some more successful than others) that are showing us what tomorrow might be like.

The i MiEV would be perfect for me in the city.
the idea of electric cars is great but i wish people and the companies manufacturing them would address the possible problems with the emf's (electro magnetic fields) they emit - or at least come up with a way to minimize or contain them

This whole "EMF/electrosmog" stuff just seems like bad science to me, just like the fears about cellphones that keep getting debunked.
Dont worry about EMF. You are surrounded by emf. Cell phones, radio transmission, electric blanket basically anything that is electric. So why worry about an electric car. People worry about emf exposure from cell phones by one gets more emf from hair dryers. What about your bluetooth headset or wrist watch? Oh, dont stand near your microwave, because there is some emf that leaks throught the shielding.
Nice to see some competition warming up in the electric car field. With competition and profits come innovation. It will also force all companies to start duplicating the successful auto companies.
Where do you get this from? Without EMF, or electro motive forces, you would not have an electric motor. You may be concerned about electro magnetic radiation. In spite of your delusion, most electric motors are intentionally shielded to contain of those very same EMF's and EMI's that you are worried about. But it isn't for you, it is to improve efficiency of conversion of electricity to motion. This is a non existent problem for electric cars.
Besides, I wish that someone would get rid of the explosive, carcinogenic, corrosive, noxious, green house gas emitting, neuro-toxin that we call gasoline out of my car and out of my house. I think that has merit.
Well, TreeHugger forgot ONE car. The Prius.
When the Stealth Switch is used, the Prius is a NEV with a pulsing range of 2 miles, meaning you can get double that on even ground.
It's also the only NEV with climate control as part of the standard package.
In Europe / Asia, the stealth switch is present, only in NA do you have to bypass with a relatively easy installation and quite cheap.
With a market of over a million Pri's on the road, A123 systems and others are / have made replacement Toyota HV batteries to extend to 10, 20, 30 miles with plug-in.
The Prius should make the EV list, as that list has NEV's listed (like the ZENN), and elsewhere in the world the switch to force EV mode is standard.
So there! end of rant :)
I do not agree that all electric cars and hybrids are in the same category.
While electric drive is all in the same category, pure all electric cars are really pushing the market forward in a way that hybrids are the market crossover toward all electric cars.
I see Big Oil trolls arrive here very quickly. Must be some life to be paid to lie.
Yes, electric cars are the future, what I like best in them is the zero emission.
i lol'ed at when i saw the Tango!!!
A great list of real vehicles. By the way, BYD sounds like a real contender in the automotive market in the years to come.

But it's still a car and the energy still needs to come from somewhere. Lots of nice heavy metals in the batteries too.
"But it's still a car and the energy still needs to come from somewhere. Lots of nice heavy metals in the batteries too."
Yes, but they're much more energy efficient than gasoline (most of which is lost as heat), and much easier to update to clean energy. Also, you can charge them off peak (at night) when the electricity would be wasted anyway.
As for the batteries, li-ion batteries are non-toxic and recyclable. NiMH do contain some heavy metals, but they are on the way out and are recyclable too.
Electric has been proven and is improving. What bothers me most is how I read about some new car that will be sold somewhere else but not in the USA or at least for years.
What's up with that?
Why do we have to wait 10 or 20 yrs for them to lower emissions and increase gas mileage? Are they afraid we’ll take their jobs?
I’m looking forward to solar on my roof and a ELECTRO-CAR in the driveway.
remember though that electric cars are only zero emission if you are re charging the batteries with renewable energy ie; hydro, solar, wind, geothermal etc. There are losses from generation, through transmission to your battery charger, which means greater emmisions. Also if the power you are using is generated by coal, gas, nuclear etc are you really saving the planet if you drive an electric car? I think it is a great technology but people have to be aware of the real emmisions created when taking power from generators that release carbon. Hopefully there will also be a great focus on renewable energy also.
Fortunately, people are a step or two ahead. They have forgotten all about electric cars which now seem oh so mid 2008. Back when oil prices were high and people still could afford expensive cars by taking out second or third zero percent mortgages on their McMansions. Now $40,000 cars that you have to plug-in don't seem like such a great idea.
At change.gov, people are all over rail and transit, not electric cars.

We seriously need to get on with the business of becoming energy independent. While we are doing the happy dance around the pumps with the lower prices OPEC is planning yet more production cuts and will not quit until they achieve their desired price per barrel. The record high prices this past year have done serious damage to our economy and society. It would cost the equivalent of 60 cents per gallon to charge and drive an elctric car. If all gasoline cars, trucks, and suv's instead had plug-in electric drivetrains, the amount of electricity needed to replace gasoline is about equal to the estimated wind energy potential of the state of North Dakota.WE must move forward with energy independence. We have the knowledge, we have the technology, what America lacks is a plan. Jeff Wilson has a new book out that is beyond awesome. The Manhattan Project of 2009 Energy Independence NOW. He walks you through every aspect of oil, what it is used for besides gas, our depletion of it. The worlds increased need ie 3rd world countries becoming more modernized and consuming more. He explains alternative energy source and what role they can play to replace oil. His research is backed up with hard data and even includes a time frame and proposed legislative agendas to wean America off oil. http://www.themanhattanprojectof2009.com
