StubHub has launched a program in conjunction with the National Forests Foundation that will help restore national forests across the US through the sales of post-season football game tickets.
The 2008-2009 NFL Playoffs and Super Bowl will launch the first-ever StubHub Tickets for Trees events, where every ticket purchased will result in a tree being planted in a National Forest. Trees will be planted in the National Forests closest to each team hosting a playoff game.
Tickets for Trees is a very cool program, but we have to note the irony. Replanting trees near the location of playoff games will barely make a dent in the total environmental footprint of a football game - from the paper used in the tickets themselves to the emissions created through holding a football game with tens of thousands of spectators.
At any rate, one tree will be planted for every StubHub ticket sold for a playoff game or the Super Bowl, and one tree will be planted for every dollar donated straight to the participating national park. Right now, the participating teams are the Arizona Cardinals, San Diego Chargers, Miami Dolphins, Minnesota Vikings, Tennessee Titans, Pittsburgh Steelers, New York Giants, and Carolina Panthers. The Super Bowl tickets will benefit the Ocala National Forest, though it'd also be great if the game were to be carbon neutral again.
