Chill Out on Dubious Dubai's First Refrigerated Beach

versace hotel dubai cooled beach image

It's hot in Dubai, averaging 40C (104F) and often hitting 50C (122F) in summer. Perhaps tourists visiting this desert locale don't check this out before they book their junket (or the rules about what you can do on the beach Green bikinis are okay, right?). Or perhaps if you can afford to stay at the new Palazzo Versace you expect nature to be bent to your will. You expect cool sand. That is what Soheil Abedian, founder of the hotel, thinks:

“We will suck the heat out of the sand to keep it cool enough to lie on,” he said. “This is the kind of luxury that top people want.”

versace hotel dubai cooled sand image

According to Times Online, Abedian is seriously planning ways to cool the sand to try and keep visitors from burning their feet:

The beach will have a network of pipes beneath the sand containing a coolant that will absorb heat from the surface.

The swimming pool will be refrigerated and there are also proposals to install giant blowers to waft a gentle breeze over the beach.

The scheme is likely to infuriate environmentalists.

I doubt it, nothing surprises environmentalists about Dubai any more. As Rachel Noble of Tourism Concern, a UK group that promotes sustainable tourism, told the Times:

“Dubai is like a bubble world where the things that are worrying the rest of the world, like climate change, are simply ignored so that people can continue their destructive lifestyles.”

If they're going to cool the sand (which is a dumb idea), why don't they pump the coolant-filled tubes to the ocean water in a closed-loop system. That would keep the sand just above the water temperature, but without the excessive coolants and refrigerants.

LA: or even a water cooled heat pump, there are a few greener options.

jump to top Josh_Cali says:

seems like they should be able to utilize all that captured heat and use it to generate energy & hot water.

jump to top Chas says:

yeah.. that's what I was thinking... if you go to all the trouble of refrigerating the beach you might as well make some use of that heat:

1.) use it as a pre-heating cycle for solar thermal
2.) hot water for those myriad guests in the hotel
3.) use solar power to cycle water from a few feet below the sand's surface to the top layer. Like reverse geothermal heat... everyone knows that the top 2 inches of sand are ridiculously hot, but only a few inches down and it's nice and cool.

jump to top Theodore says:

4.) it's dry in Dubai as well so instead of blowing refrigerated air over the people concoct a giant sand/water/hotair beach cooling / air cooling swamp cooler and take advantage of evaporative cooling.

It doesn't have to fossil fuel powered right?

jump to top Theodore says:

"seems like they should be able to utilize all that captured heat and use it to generate energy & hot water."

Generating hot water in that environment is totally feasible, and should be done, but generating energy is a lot harder.

40-50C is low grade heat, and generally you want a bigger delta T to generate electricity from. not impossible, but not ideal situation.

jump to top JC says:

@ chas

Ha ha ha haa... hey Chas, as a guy who used to live there, trust ,e they have more than enough hot water... hotter than that which is from these refrigerated beaches....

at Josh_cali

dude, first of...that method is probably greener and not quite as effective as refrigeration.. do you know how much more tubing they'd neeed to get effective "cooling"??

This is the gulf man... the future age Caribbean of the middle-east... they have ze oil to burn, so they'll burn it... till they run out (this is only Abu-Dhabi btw, Dubai has negligible reserves of oil..) when the power from oil starts dying out, then they'll go green in a jiffy and start going green like nobody's business...thats what it's about. Flash. to attract Tourism..

jump to top sid says:

While they're at it, perhaps they can make a microclimate that is cold, rainy and overcast. Then they won't need to have a beach at all.

jump to top Richard Jackman says:

this is absolutely ridiculous. do we really have nothing better to do with our energy than air condition beaches?

jump to top Cassidy says:

And this is why OPEC is cutting Oil production. To increase cost to so that America and the rest of the world can pay for their Refirgerate beach and everything else the super rich desires in Dubai. jump to top aFF2KIN says:

This is the most absurd thing i have ever heard of. Instead of cooling sand- dont they think that money might be used for something else that is more useful. Like, world hunger, homeless, research for cancer, etc..... That much stupidity should be against the law!

jump to top Mandy says:

Theodore - Dubai is anything but dry in the summer. Go there btween May and November. That's 110 degrees plus insane humidity.

jump to top Brian says:

Um, why not simply add limestone to the sand? It stops the sand from getting hot in the first place.. Ever been to Cancun people? The sand never gets hot due to the naturally occuring limetone

jump to top ScubaGirly says:

Um.. I live in "the rest of the world" and I'm not a Lemming who believes in the stupid notion of human caused climate change.. get real!

jump to top Me says:

if they just filtered the water through pipes under the sand and then back into the ocean that may cool things off, plus create a nice bubbly effect in the water. also maybe they could have those tents that come with solar powered fans in them that way they could take advantage of all that sun, or they could cover the sand altogether and pimp water between two layers of floor which would keep it cool to the touch... I mean every one wants to make a buck but not at the expense of where we live...

What gets me the most about this whole Dubai issue is the amount of WASTED MONEY to construct this place to begin with. Think of all the positive that could have come from those funds around the world. They are wasting valuable money on more earth-destructive projects - all in the name of appeasing to the rich. Absolutely pathetic. If I were ever to become rich, I still would never visit there. I just found out one of my fave hiphop artist loves it there, frequents there and even has some concerts there. Okay, so they can figure out how to make umpteen story towers twirl in unison and plan and build towers that have 57 swimming pools, certainly they can handle this. To cool the sand and the beach from below is a much "greener" concept than installing huge blowers that will more than likely only annoy the guests by turning up the sand, etc. Besides, with the water temps and the temps of the deeper sand, they should be able to plan and construct a "semi closed loop system" that cycles from the ocean. Not only will it not use any chemical coolants, should it "spring a leak", it would be safer all the way around! :)

jump to top shasha says:

You guys are all over the place. A Delta T of 10 degrees F is ideal for HVAC applications. This could be used in a similar fashion as a water source heat pump to satisfy a portion of the resorts heating needs. And yes even if you are cooling you need heat to control space temperature set points. I doubt it would generate enough heat for the hot water. And as for piping it from the sand to the ocean, how good of an idea do you think it is to heat up the water in the immediate area of the beach 8-10 degrees?

If you recycle the energy from the upper layer to the lower layer of sand you should get they desired effect but you would be limiting your delta T potential as the two layers would eventually reach a temperature balance and you would also be wasting energy that could be used as stated above. This would probably be better at harnessing solar energy than solar cells in the long run as solar cell technology is expensive and inefficient still. Sand is also not fragile, already in place and will not need to be replaced.

Many of the structures being built there while admittedly garish also implore cutting edge engineering. They may be a greener than you assume.

jump to top Anonymous says:

You should put to rest any idea of capturing some of the heat. It will take great energy to cool the sand. The energy exchange rate is horrible and the benefit is negligible so the idea of that is moot.

If Tourists are to burn Jet fuel to go to a beach destination during the summer, Dubai should not be on that list.

Of course, if they can use solar/wind derived energy to do this, then you may have something of a solution, however it still doesn't address the tons of CO2 this place will produce while being built and during its operating tenure.

Curious as to why most of the construction companies erecting these absurdities are western companies.

Being a "Top Person" myself, I would definitely want to brag about how eco-friendly my vacation in New Babylon was. I can barely go outside in the summer in Vegas so perhaps a shaded canopy will suffice on the beach... it could be made of slim, elegant solar panels that are set far enough apart that unfettered sun gets through, though not so much that any burn could set in. These panels could generate the energy to cool other areas of the sand so my toesies could maintain their dignity during my dramatic entrances and exits. I also like the swamp cooler idea though I abhor the use of the word "swamp" in the same company with "luxury". Another title, perhaps?

As hard as it sounds, consider NOT using petrol as a fuel so they can't afford to do this. We must be responsible for the air on this planet, because we all share it. Cool the sand so what... people can lay directly in 120 degree sunlight? Maybe they better try a patch first, see if slightly cooled sand does anything for people wanting the sun-facing side of their bodies to cook like an egg. Yeah, hot sand often can't even be walked on, granted. But maybe umbrellas and flip flops would be better. Alas, I'm afraid this is a ploy to lure rich people and if they could somehow turn down the sun, they wouldn't. It might attract commoners. If they could turn up the sun, so that they would need air conditioned sand, they would, so they could attract the Donald Trumps of the world who will spend more money on wining and dining, and on the novelty of a billion dollar AC system just for their toes. On the other hand, being the species that we are, I think it's "cool" that we can apply whatever the mind imagines, and sometimes that's enough reason to do it. Otherwise, heck, there may be no fun in being any different than a camel or a pig.

well, your all probably right. they don't need more hot water. oddly enough if I remember my physics they could use all that heat to cool the building.

I'm not a physicist so I don't understand how thermodynamics works. i do know that there is a scientist that has designed a refridgerator for use in third world countries. it uses no elecrictity and is powered by the heat of a campfire. seems like the same principals could be used here & now what seems like a frivolous idea would be a sustainable one.

But who cares about nuclear fallout, or the use of private jets by ivory-tower "green" celebrities, when you can complain about one lousy hotel in Dubai?

I think that cooled down sand and refrigerated pools are little to much for me. I would be content with simply a few misters, a beach chair and an umbrella.

jump to top Jordan says:

Maybe if you are ever rich, you can do all of the wonderful things you have described. If Mr. Sultan wants a refrigerated beach, he's going to get a refrigerated beach. Maybe you can ask him how to refrigerate the world so we can all stop listening to you blabberbots pontificate about global warming. It's as though none of you believe in evolution. Stuff sprouts up other stuff disappears, have I got the gyst of it? Pffft, please.

They should bail out the auto industry instead.

I love it!!! Who cares about the environment not me? Anyways it’s not like were going to live forever might as well be as comfortable as possible wile were here. And I sure don’t care what the environmentalists have to say unless they live in the forest and walk every were they are damaging the environment to I.E. for all you blogers computers need power were do they think its coming from mother nature NOPE, cars/ public transportation also taking from the environment fossil fuels, bikes need to be built some how lets face it we really cared what the tree huggers had to say we would all have to move off the planet and make it a protected reserve.

jump to top Anonymous says:

they do not care about the environment anyway. They cut down the oil production only when the price needs to go back up to sustain their opulent lifestyles. Why do they build all those luxurious places? Becouse they can! If I was to decide what to do with the auto industry when they come to me begging for tenths of bilions, I would send them to the arab world for the money, becouse the cars will burn their oil, generating more wealth. But they do not join the party unless there is a profit.

Hey, what a fantastic idea. I think I'll do the system in my backyard. I say go all out, build more on the water, do everything you can do to change the world. If those whom can afford it, good for you!
Sarcasm, for I will sit back and watch all of this destroyed by father/mother nature one day and I will laugh, cause one day, doing all that karma to the earth, the earth pays back 3 fold.
Blessed Be.
Oh yeah, remember all those well off rich people who wanted even more money and the total scam came out to be, hum, what? 50 BILLION LOST
Guess who's sitting, laughing, oh, those poor....lol poor rich people of greed.

The grammer is sad, at best, in these comments. At a mininum, people should realize that "there" (is a place-think HERE) "their" pertains to someone else-and they're is a conjunction which means they are. Idiocracy seems real.

The people who have the money or access to people with money really aren't going to care what the minority they ARE NOT targeting think. Many of us may not spend a week end in Vegas during our lives, much less Dubai.

jump to top kansan says:

really? a cooled beach? As if there wasn't already and energy and water crisis starting around the world. I hope to hell that we don't bail DUBAI out next for their foolishness.

jump to top Paul Tupelo says:

Sorry Sr but do not wish to spend my millions on this crap.

jump to top Marcial says:

Here's the upside from planet Earth.
After they pump all the oil out from underneath the sand in the middle east, a HUGE sinkhole will open up and swallow all the greedy, idiotic inhabitants.

It's called liquefaction...much like the sand in an hourglass.

Payback is a B***h.

Serves 'em right.

to those who want to add posts to this link -

*most* of the people on this forum writing about gas prices, paying for gas while Dubai blows it all away on cooling sand, whats wrong with the arabs etc... they are all ignorant, good for absolutely NOTHING, pieces of rotting s**t. you know why?? well if you look at a map, and read up on the UAE,, you'll find that Dubai is a separate state-city. one of 7 in the country. Dubai has negligible reserves of oil. and not of very great quality. so it depends almost entirely on tourism. hence all the gimmicks.

then there's the point that the UAE as a whole is a huge donor of funds for peace missions.

there's also the point that the UAE is stating up green movements internally as well starting from buildings.

getting back to the previous posters, they have no clue of economics and politics of the area. hence they can be automatically be put into the category of head-up-their-butts hobos who'll squeal GREEN at the drop of a hat, and they think their unwiped arses are greener than the rest of the world...

I have been a resident in Dubai for about 25 years now and my father also has spent most of his life here. (good or bad but think of this)

Sid, how many Green projects are there REALLY in Dubai ?
Isn't this one of the world's hottest deserts ?
How many Solar Power plants are here ?
How many Wind Power stations are in Dubai ? (deserts can get very windy - sand storms)
How much dust do you see from construction ? (I can't remember a day since last year visibility was like it was before the construction boom).
How many GREEN buildings really are there in Dubai ?
Eevn after the completion of the so called GREEN projects planned, how many really affect the society as a whole ? (makes you think aren't these just Gimicks)
Oh! and heres a question I've asked for the last 5 years:
WHERE ARE THE HYBRID / GREEN CARS ?!
Did you know it is illeagal to import anything Hybrid or Green in Dubai ? (well maybe not officially, it would look bad, so they just never pass the paper work, I tried believe me)
If they make so much money to spend in Billions for all this construction. How much of it do they reserve for environmental programs and GREEN initiatives.

HAVE YOU SEEN THE BEACHES!!!!!

Beaches were heaven in Dubai 10 years ago. It is a total wreck now. The sand feels like rubbish under my feet.

Have you really lived in Dubai????

jump to top Aucturus says:

Well, I have been working in Dubai several time and I was really surprised, how many small and environmental friendly cars appeared the last time. A few years ago it were just SUVs and such cars, but now it slowly changes. And I do think there is a slight rise of environmental friendly way of life. And concerning the solar energy: Sid you answered the question by yourself: there are sandstorms, so it is not that easy!!! Anyway I guess it´s always easy to say you yourself are aware of environmental issues if you grew up in a country where the law forces you to do so and even pre school tall you to seperate waste...
