In an area of the world with no shortage of sunlight, awash in oil wealth (and being able to detect the way the cleantech wind is blowing...) and with a penchant of late of doing things to the n-th degree it should come as no surprise that the Middle East’s largest solar panel manufacturing facility will be built in Dubai.
1-Million Square Foot Facility to Open 2010
Announced at the Green Dubai World Forum 2008 the 1-million square foot Solar Technolgies FZE facility is expected to begin construction at the end of 2008, with production beginning in 2010.
No word on how many panels the plant will be able to turn out in a year, but Khaleej Times says that “The first phase will see the production of solar panels as big as 5.7sqm.”

in January 2008 I was in Dubai and the only use of solar energy was for powering brand new parking meters installed few months ago.
People I spoke to (non-westerners) were totally unaware that solar power can be used for anything more then powering a calculator. And yet they have such a potential (and need for energy) there.
Well done Dubai! Leave it to their mega-craze to show other middle eastern nations the way.
Well done indeed!
Good stuff.
I wonder if they will buy up Evolution Solar Corp (EVSO).
They just announced the release of a solar panel that is 33% more efficient within the same footprint, with an output rated at 300 watts.
WOW, kind of makes you think they know something we don't doesn't it? We have the knowledge, we have the technology, what America lacks is a plan. Jeff Wilson has a new book out that is beyond awesome. The Manhattan Project of 2009 Energy Independence NOW. He walks you through every aspect of oil, what it is used for besides gas, our depletion of it. The worlds increased need ie 3rd world countries becoming more modernized and consuming more. He explains EVERY alternative energy source and what role they can play to replace oil. His research is backed up with hard data and even includes a time frame and proposed legislative agendas to wean America off oil. www.themanhattanprojectof2009.com
Can anyone provide me with some links to find out how Dubai was actually created (developed, that is). I know that Sheik (sp?) Mohammad seems to be the brains and money behind it, but I am looking for other details that have to do with American Government involvement, if any.
Thanks,
Kara
Does Dubai have the $? I was under then impression that they were scrounging to find finances. Maybe I'm wrong?

Dubai is the pearl of the Gulf.. THE tourist destination in the gulf to go to... they are building the tallest tower in the world - Burj Dubai
they built the palm beach islands visible from space
they are going to build the world islands, a mini world map also visible from space
they have the Burj al Arab- one of the most luxurious, and tallest hotels in the world- not to mention the first 7 star hotel... they expand their airport size like every 2 to 3 years...
Any new car what ever it may be... once it hits the markets, it's there on the roads in Dubai inside 3 weeks...
they throw away money like nobody's business... they also invest in everybody's business.
some time ago construction was sucha boom 25% of the WORLDS cranes were in Dubai for construction... the place is shooting up like mad
they give away ferrari's mercs, beemers, porsches free... everyday for 30 days during the Dubai shopping festival..

Wow, that thing is crazy looking. I would love to see this movement find a way to land in the states. Solor could really change the platform.
