Any Nation That Wants to Combat Climate Change Has an Ally in the US: President-Elect Obama

by Matthew McDermott, New York, NY on 11.19.08
Business & Politics

In case anyone had their doubts that president-elect Barack Obama’s commitment to combatting climate change (especially reengaging with the international community) and in promoting renewable energy, check out this video clip which was prepared for presentation at a Governor’s Global Climate Summit happening in California.

While he doesn’t articulate anything that we haven’t already heard on the campaign trail, I think the important thing to note here is, as the New York Times also points out, that despite the ongoing economic hardship, addressing climate change is at the top of the Obama agenda.

The devil may be in the financial details on this one (especially now...) but it is certainly good to hear the words,

When I am president, any governor who’s willing to promote clean energy will have a partner in the White House. Any company that’s willing to invest in clean energy will have an ally in Washington. And any nation that’s willing to join the cause of combatting climate change will have an ally in the United States of America.

Good.

An urgently needed change in Washington coming soon, long needed changes in energy policies soon after. DB

This is a great day to hear Obama take a serious stance via video on this issue. He did exactly what this company is doing, saving emissions from not traveling while offering all businesses this opportunity to be environmentally careful in their day to day operations. Obama brought to the forefront exactly why we need this type of business.

Is he the perfect President? It seems like everytime
he opens his mouth, I agree with him absolutely 100% -its incredible! why can't we have politicians like him in the UK (where, by way of contrast, any possible policy of combatting climate change has been quietly swept under the carpet..).. i've never been more enamoured by the American electorate. You guys really did the world a great service, so thanks!

We here in the states have felt that way for the past 8 years, or longer.

Matthew – great post. I agree that it's good to hear President Elect Obama has the environment near the top of his list – my fear is that people think the government can do this alone, when in fact it's going to take nothing less than government plus for-profit business, NGOs, and consumers to make this happen. I just posted a piece on this at www.earthkeeper.com/blog if you're interested.
