1973: Toyota Station Wagon Turns into RV
by Lloyd Alter, Toronto on 10. 6.08

With more and more Americans having to sleep in their cars, it is too bad that Toyota never put this into production.
In case the copy is too small:
"Toyota recently unveiled this jazzy-looking station wagon at the New York auto show. The station wagon (bottom photo) opens into a roomy camper (top). Toyota calls this 186-inch-long car the RV-2. It seats four, and stores in any garage. But the clamshell canopy can be unfolded anytime you’re parked, and there’s enough room for the passengers to eat and sleep inside. Beds, table, and chairs store neatly inside when not in use.
Unfortunately, there are no definite plans to produce this unique RV, but it’s interesting to see auto manufacturers cooking up some attractive new ideas. " ::Modern Mechanix

I suppose there may well be a run on Pontiac Aztecs or old Volkswagen Westphalias. Or you can get a modern version from TreeHugger Hero Jay Baldwin- the Quickup Camper.

In the spirit of the old Volkswagen Westphalias, there's a company making pop-up campers to put on the roof of a Honda Elment. http://www.ursaminorvehicles.com/camper_main.htm
What is this? Car and Drive retro edition?
This has nothing to do with the environment or really anything of prevalence today.
I think they are trying to show that you can have an RV in a smaller size. The problem with this setup is modern cars are all unibody so you can't just cut the rear section open, you would need to find an old body on frame wagon to start with.
You can always sleep in your car, but you can't drive a house.
