The Ultimate Carnival Ride: A Human-Powered Ferris Wheel

Southern India has a zero-emissions ride that is equally as good for laughs as it is for the environment. A fun fair operator created a ferris wheel that is human-powered. A team of men take turns hopping on the top of the wheel and riding it down to keep the wheels momentum up and passengers spinning around.

While it saves a whole lot on emissions, I have to say if this were to be taken up in the states, I see a broken bone or two and the potential for law suits. Still, it’s a blast to watch and I wouldn’t mind going for a spin myself!

It'd be interesting if they put an electrical generator in this to power the rest of the carnival.
LOL... what if they made a pedal powered ferris wheel? Or made a whole amusement park with these green attractions?
This looks a great system but it depends on one fundamental economic fact: That the human energy involved is cheaper than, or at least of comparative value to the fuel-cost alternative. In western/developed countries the cost of a given amount of work done by a human being is a very large multiple of the cost of the same work if done by almost any kind of engine, so the price of the ferris-ride would have to be be too high to attract any customers and would soon go bust.
Love it, beautiful Indian solution!
broken bone or two and the potential for law suits.
What is this about lawsuits everywhere?
If you are too stupid to understand that you could hurt yourself - wouldn't a brain surgery be a better way to solve the problem?
I enjoyed a similar ride in Bombay - a lot of fun. Although I agree principally with Mike, it may be an option for students: if the 30 people each pay 1 dollar for a 5 minute ride, that's 360 dollars the hour, even if you need to share it among 3. Better tarif than baby sitting I think + you don't need to work out at the gym.
Did anyone think that the people who are the human operators are so desperate for pay that they will even do this amazingly demeaning job! What is funny or neat about a group of people spending 10 or 12 hours a day swinging on a ferris wheel to give patrons an AMUSEMENT ride.
I don't see it as demeaning at all, or are you being sarcastic?
You should spend some time in Southern India and see what some people do for a living,
