Sustainable Sushi Guide to Be Released
Now green sushi lovers can finally figure out just how to eat their favorite rolls responsibly. Thanks to the Monterey Bay Aquarium, the Blue Ocean Institute and the Environmental Defense Fund, starting October 22nd you can print out a sustainable sushi card to carry around in your wallet with your sustainable seafood card. Some sushi to avoid and more on the card below the fold.

Together, the three guides being released may be a lot for sushi lovers to stomach. A few common favorites are on the list of rolls to avoid. Bluefin tuna and yellow fin tuna are both in the Monterey Bay Aquarium's to-be-avoided column. Farmed shrimp or ebi, freshwater eel or unagi and farmed salmon are also ones to keep away from. Wild salmon and shrimp, though, get a green light.

The cards will be unveiled at San Francisco's Tataki Sushi and Saki Bar on the 22nd, the only sustainable sushi bar in the US. The card makers hope its carriers will ask sushi bar owners more question, thus encouraging owners and sushi chefs to think more about serving sustainable options.

So what sushi can you eat with your eco-conscience on? Pacific halibut, albacore tuna, striped bass, artic char, bay scallops, and of course, imitation crab are a few of the go-aheads in the sustainable sushi guides.
