Is This the Tesla Model S?
Forget about the teaser that doesn't show anything. Commenter Jon Crain pointed us in the direction of a Road & Track article that shows a picture of what is supposed to be the Tesla Model S electric sedan. We think it looks great. Even better than the Roadster. Be warned, though. There's a chance that the final thing won't look like that (though it's not clear if this is total speculation or if R&T got an embargoed photo for their December print edition).

Tesla says the Model S will get about 240 miles per charge [on lithium-ion batteries] while still offering "exceptional performance." Numbers being bandied about include 0–60 mph in less than 6 seconds. The Model S will have a base price of about $60,000 (versus the Roadster's $109,000 price tag).

PLEASE let it look like this! In times when the big car companies can't seem to ever break the mold and do something different, and all concept car designs become boring production shadows of their former selves, its up to the small firms, like Tesla to push the boundaries of design. Of course they are already doing that with the idea of an electric car, but I hope that they continue to push the boundaries with every facet of their product. When Honda and GM are trying to copy the looks of Toyota's Prius, I'd love to see a unique and beautiful design, such as this.

AutoBlogGreen had a much more appropriate title for this story: "Rendered speculation" ... given that it's total speculation it's probably not very representative of the final product at all.

We can always hope that the car will be half as sexy as the roadster, but realities of Cd and battery technology will probably ensure that shape will have more to do with aerodynamics and cost of manufacture than styling.

jump to top Tim says:

Why is there such a big un-aerodynamic grill on the front? That much of cooling for AC and system cooling is unlikely.

Looking at the R&T article, I saw one commenter say "Get these electric cars on the road NOW!"

You'd think that car buffs would know better than that. They of all people should know how much time it takes between prototype and showroom floor, and why it takes so long. I can imagine what the results would be like if a car were rushed into production to satisfy my desire for instant gratification - something really important would be missing, like doors or a steering wheel.

Personally, I can hardly wait for EVs to get to showroom floors (My electricity is mostly Hydro, with new experiments in wind coming online), but I still know that I must wait a while longer.

I know nothing about cars, but this looks suspiciously like a new Nissan supercar - already on sale in Japan.

Fantastic! Love it!

This makes me like lux cars again. I think it is ethical to drive a car like this while having luxury.

jump to top Mark Kiernan says:

uh, am I the only one here that heard they laid 90% of the team that is engineering this car last week? With the economy in shambles, this is wanderlust at best. Here's betting they close shop entirely by next summer as richy-riches' pull their order for these cars due to financial difficulties...

Looks too much like the fisker karma.

jump to top Fredo Corleone says:

I love it but am afraid the final model will look nothing like this. Chevy Volt looked promising also and see how different (and boring) the production version has become. Also with gas pricing going down (paid $2.09 yesterday) I think we wont see this car anytime soon :(

jump to top David says:

Even though gas prices are down, consumers haven't forgotten the high price of fuel just a few months back. I think Tesla will come out, and I don't think it'll be an entirely new product either.

jump to top Green Product Ideas says:

It's a good looking car, if that is actually what it will look like (I think that's a rendering, not a photo), but it looks increasingly unlikely that it will ever see production. Tesla is circling the drain. They are apparently burning through about $3 million per month and only have about $9 million left, which I don't think is enough to finish the Roadsters they've already been paid for.

Musk says he's arranged for another $20 million from investors, but that only buys them another 6 months or so until they're out of money again. With the declining economy, investment is going to be more difficult to find, and the market for $60,000 - $100,000 electric luxury/sport cars is probably evaporating, so it is unlikely they'll find new customers from which to take deposits.

Naming the company after Nikola Tesla may have been prophetic. He was a technical genious, but died penniless and in debt because he lacked business sense.

jump to top gl says:

Good looking but way too flashy. I'd rather have a more minimalistic design that is more reserved, with efficiency and speed under the hood.

jump to top Ken Clive [TypeKey Profile Page] says:

Looks great, I really want to see Tesla do well, more out of principle than anything else. The world needs innovative environmentally friendly cars that don't sacrifice style or performance.

I just hope theyll be turning a profit with every car they make soon because the reservation for new cars is booked a year in advance already! 50 cars are in the hands of consumers so far, 2 years ahead of a single chevy volt. I'm really impressed with the company, we should be supporting these kind of efforts. They're doing a lot with very little.

jump to top greens says:

'S' and 'Roadster' are great looking cars. I am certain they will do well regardless of the economy. There is always market for goods things. One only needs to promote them.

The money neede will come.

Nikola Tesla did die pennyless but less a larrge volume of work - same as Edgar Allen Poe !

jump to top Changoo Kashyap says:

Why can't car manufacturers make sporty sedans like this? Why should hybrid cars look like a Prius or anything ugly?

It's the 21st century and they can't design anything as good looking as Tesla's? Don't they know that the more cool looking a car is the more people would buy it? GM, Ford, and Chrysler CEOs should be fired.....they should all merge and get Steve Jobs to take over the reigns and design team.

I read all the comments and the info given, it is really a remarkable work you are doing there.
the most interesting thing that i really want to see and sit in are those dashing cars.
loved it all.

jump to top ferzeb says:

Good developement!
Make electric cars affordable to the big public and we can shift from oilbased economy to green energy.
