Philips and Starwood Green Up Hotel TVs

Getting a contract with a hotel chain is a pretty big deal for a TV manufacturer. And going green is also a pretty big deal for a hotel considering the push for more eco-conscious lodgings by travelers. So Philip and Starwood are probably both pretty happy signing what is thought to be the biggest “green TV” deal in history.
Philips’ of SmartPower2 energy efficient televisions will go into Starwood’s 460 properties across the US in an exclusive three-year agreement. That is a whole heck of a lot of TVs. So, the energy savings should be huge also, right?
By using LCD TVs that consume 40% less energy than the TVs the hotel company currently uses, they expect to save a full $12 million in energy costs over the seven-year lifetime of the some 80,000 TVs being installed. Yes, that’s a mighty fine savings.
It might be pushing the greenwashing line to call it “EcoTV” as Philips calls the television set, but with a significant energy use reduction, there is definitely an eco edge.
The Starwood hotels where you might find these EcoTVs are: St. Regis, The Luxury Collection, W, Westin, Le Méridien, Sheraton, Four Points by Sheraton and Aloft. Not necessarily the first places you think of as green lodgings, but we must applaud steps in the right direction. And we can clap fairly loudly - Starwood isn’t stopping with just these TVs. They’re also starting a hotel brand called Element that is to be a leader in green hotels.
"This is a defining agreement for us, and is indicative of the fundamental change in mindset we have implemented around procurement and sourcing, and the partners we want to work with to achieve this," said Paul Davis, Senior Vice President of Global Sourcing at Starwood.
