Happy World Vegetarian Day!
by Lloyd Alter, Toronto on 10. 1.08

TreeHugger keeps saying that one of the best things you can do to reduce your carbon footprint is to eat less meat; in the UK some are even proposing that it be rationed. Perhaps today is good day to go without; it is World Vegetarian Day.
The North American Vegetarian Society suggests some other good reasons not to eat meat:
Benefits of vegetarianism include:
• reducing the risk of major killers like heart disease, stroke and cancers while cutting exposure to food borne pathogens;
• offering a viable answer to feeding the world's hungry, through more efficient use of grains and other crops;
• saving animals from suffering in factory farm conditions and from painful slaughter;
• conserving vital, but limited freshwater, fertile topsoil and other precious resources;
• preserving irreplaceable ecosystems, such as rainforests and other wildlife habitats;
• mitigating the ever-expanding environmental pollution of animal agriculture; and the list goes on. ::World Vegetarian Day

You've forgotten one very good benefit:
clarity of mind.
I realise it's controversial but I (and more importantly millions of Hindus!) know it's true - if you take meat out of your diet your mental clarity will improve...
Acording to a study in Australia people who don't eat meat suffer from brain shrinkage. Make sure you take B12 suppliments if you decide on this life style.

Happy Vegetarian Day!
But why not tell your readers to go vegetarian, or better, vegan, instead of simply eating less meat? You can't be a half-environmentalist, right?
Anyway, cheers! And Go Vegan!

y not tell us just eat carbo and supplements. It is much more environmental friendly plus healthy and cheaper. For eg instead of drinking 3 glasses of milk ($3) to get 1000mg of calcium, just eat 2 supplementary tablets which costs only 50 cents. Eat proteins supplements too. Eat vitamins too. So you dun have to grow crops
