Survey: The Volt- Would You Buy One?
by Lloyd Alter, Toronto on 09.17.08

So they rolled out the Chevy Volt yesterday, promising 40 mile electric range and and great efficiency when the gas engine kicks in. The price is higher than they hoped, at $40K.

If it was a honda I would in a heart beat, but first year GM's built on standard platforms have a lot of "issues" I can only imagine how many problems this car will have. They should probably just call it the Edsel 2 and be done with it.
From Honda I would buy this vehicle. From GM I'll have to see it to believe it. Too much GM BS over the years.
This definitely what we need on the worlds around the world.
I live in an apartment and would have no way to charge it. It is rather sad that 1/3 of Americans currently can't switch to electric cars even if they wanted to because of this issue.
"first year GM's built on standard platforms have a lot of 'issues'"
Everyone's first year cars have issues, but with most foreign cars the first year car you see is actually a second or third year car, as the manufacturers typically launch a vehicle in its domestic market first and then follow in other markets. That bit of time between allows time to debug "issues", which gives the foreign car a higher perceived qualtiy.
The current Toyota Camry was launched in the US in its true first year. The quality was horrible. Since then those issues have been resolved.
When Mercedes first started building vehicles in the US there were complaints that the quality was substandard, but it was actually on par with their first year vehicles built in Germany, which American buyers never saw.
My big problem is that it's GM - as I was just telling my brother-in-law on Sunday, I would never buy a GM car, just based on quality and the driving experience. But, I'm happy to give the Volt a chance - maybe GM can change its spots with this vehicle. I don't think the price tag is too high (would be fine with it lower, of course), as it will be a status symbol at least here in California for the first year or two.
Take $10k off and give me a back half more suited to hauling stuff than people (like my Fit) and I'm there. It will still be a money loser, but I'll pay the premium.
(I drive 12k miles/year, 20% of that is four long haul highway trips that would use gas, the remaining 80% on 357 days would never start the engine. That 80% is about 425 gallons of gas, say $1500/year that I could shift to electricity, saving something like $1000/year. That doesn't justify a $15k premium in price on an economic basis.)
Edsel was a Ford Product. Maybe a Vega comparison is in order. It was a nice looking car new. The down side was the car would rust out around the windshield almost as fast as the silicon block 4 cylinder would overheat and self destruct.
I'd like a new Volt, but I don't expect to see it for a long time, because they don't want to build it. I see GM hype for a hybrid Malibu and Aura, but I can't find a dealer that has ever had one. The GM response I read was that it is a battery issue. Oddly enough, I CAN find hybrid Tahoes & Saturn SUV's. If I wanted to pretend to be "green" whilst getting about 20 mpg, I'd trot on down and get one.
Tempting but GM has terrible design and build quality these days so no way would i get the first year one.
+ i dont want an ICE in it. take that out and add more batteries. duh.
Finally, GM has tried really hard to ignore the environmental issues for so long i dont feel like giving them any of my money, ever. Let them die or reduce to a smaller manufacturer and allow new car makers a chance to shine with new ideas.
crazy ideas like aerodynamics, fuel efficiency and weight reduction.
i hope the US govt doesn't bail them out but you they will. they kinda have to. so much for a free market.
No thanks. The iMIEV is coming out at about the same time, and it's all I need. Plus it's a hatchback, which I *do* need.
Every GM car I have ever owned (5 over the years) have had electrical problems like locking themselves intermittently, power windows intermittently not working etc., my mechanic even said once that he thought my oldsmobile was haunted! It would just refuse to start for no apparent reason. 40k for an ELECTRIC car from GM?????
You know, though, if GM, Ford, and Chrysler would have invested in the technology when I bought my Honda Insight in 2000, they would not be in the financial crisis they are in now,
not to mention the condition of the Detroit metropolitan economy the auto industry destroyed . Buy American?? There are no American cars anymore.
Finally! A car worth trading the vette for. from 35mpg highway to infinite mpg. yeah!
Vette to Volt...
A different kind of efficiency.
has a nice ring to it...
Yes Im crazy. No Im not being sarcastic.
ADD over and out...
Nobody should have to pay $30K to care about the environment. I won't buy a second-hand hybrid because of the cost, and I'm certainly not spending $500 a month and up for basic transportation. Sorry. Love the car, though.
