Warren raises a very good point in his post about how "there remains that eco-conundrum of how do we get ourselves from our mostly urban existence to those deserts, mountains, rivers, coasts and forests with their many lessons to learn."

The last several years all of my vacations have been self propelled. I am an avid cyclist and do not see the point of driving someplace I can get to by bike, the only exception was a short trip to Chicago that didn't leave me time to bike there and back for which I took Amtrak. My latest was a cycle touring trip to a beautiful state park in my home state, i had been there many times before but always by car and could not believe all the wonderful little shops and sights I had missed traveling by car.
I would love to cycle but the price of having enough land to grow stuff is living 8 miles from town on a lethal 70mph road.
