The Windy Apple? Possible 300 Megawatt Offshore Wind Farm on Long Island Discussed

When New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg outlined his vision of how the Big Apple could become a leader in renewable energy the majority of the city’s press focused on the most ludicrous aspect of his speech: Placing wind turbines on the city's bridges and buildings. The New York Post went so far as to create a graphic of the Empire State Building with an industrial scale turbine atop it. The more realistic part of his proposal would look something more like the this next announcement from the Long Island Power Authority and Con Edison:

10 Miles Off The Rockaways
LIPA chief executive Kevin Law announced yesterday that the feasibility of a “significant” wind farm project is being investigated at a location 10 miles off the coast of the Rockaways in Queens (Newsday). In this context, significant means a 300 MW wind farm, with a price tag of about $1.5 billion. As yet no specific location has been determined for the proposed wind farm.

A previously mooted wind project off Jones Beach failed to move forward as the cost estimates grew from an initial $200 million to $800 million.

I hope the ball gets rolling on this because we need it. I liked the tidal turbine article from yesterday too.

There is definitely wind to generate something in the concrete canyons.
