New Museum of Arts and Design Opens With Second Lives

Edward Durell Stone's later works were mostly embarrassments, including the lollipop building for the Huntington Hartford Museum on Columbus Circle in New York City. Controversially, it was recycled into the new Museum of Arts and Design by Brad Cloepfil. It is appropriate that the opening show should also be about Second Lives.

It is an incredible show of artworks made from recycled materials, Susie MacMurray making a dress from rubber gloves, Paul Villinski making butterflies out of old records, Do Ho Suh making a jacket out of dog tags. Treehugger favorites in the show include the Campana brothers, Stuart Haygarth and Piet Hein Eek.

The building has a very small footprint and a grand stair to the second floor, but only two elevators that never seem to come, so one spends a lot of time climbing the fire stairs, which they could have paid a bit more attention to the design of. Other than that, it is a beautiful second life for the building, and the show, Second Lives, is a must for anyone interested in the art of recycling. ::Museum of Arts and Design
