TreeHugger Tip: Little Bits' Monica Rodgers on Teaching Children to Compost
by Emma Grady, New York, NY on 08.18.08
Little Bits Founder and CEO Monica Rodgers shares a great tip on teaching children the value of composting and incorporating it into their weekly schedule! To teach and remind her children to do their "little bit" she has created a group of characters called the Earth Savers. In Monica'svideo tip, part of our TreeHugger Tips project, we see how her children are inspired by the characters Monica has created and that each of them have their own day to take out the composting!
If you were unable to view the video above read on for the full text of Monica's tip on teaching your children about composting.
“Hi, I’m Monica Rodgers from LittleBits with my second green tip. What I’ve done here is I’ve actually created, with an old wedding gift, a compost bucket for my kids and I’m really trying to help them understand that whenever they’re done with their banana or apple peels that everything goes in here and I’ve got Ernie here as our character to teach kids the value and importance of composting then what we do is once this bucket is full we take it out in the backyard and dump it and each kid has their own day to take out the compost so it’s a great thing to get your kids doing and if you would like the group of eco-characters that I’ve created just email me through littlebits.com and I can get you your own set for your own home. Thanks so much.”
Children are our future and by teaching them the value of the environment and the importance of preserving the world around them we are helping to ensure a positive future for the earth.

Great job getting the kids composting. My kids love it. The love dumping the compost bucket from the kitchen into the compost bin and they also like taking turns turning the compost. It's a family event. We compost all of our food scraps (that the dog doesn't get), dryer lint, vacuum cleaner dirt, coffee grounds and filters, cardboard egg cartons (the kids love to rip them up) not to mention yard waste.

Our kids are into recycling as well. Not just cans and bottles, they know that passing toys and clothes onto other children is a great way of saving our earth's resources.
We can also get our kids into good ecological habits when they are young. Simple things such as turning off lights and TV when not in a room. Covering up with a blanket rather than turning up the heat, etc. These habits will last a lifetime and will get passed down as well.
Hey, here's a "green tip" -- STOP BREEDING CHILDREN.
Or did that never occur to you?
It actually did occur to one of our green tip contributors. You can view his post here!
I would hazard a bet that a person would have a much better impact on the world having children and raising them 'green' then to be some of the bitter venom spitting child haters on websites.
I just bought a Jora JK 125 composter and I am truly amazed at how my children love taking their turn spinning it. This is an amazing composter as wel with twin insulated chambers for year round composting. Check it out here, Jora JK125
