Carbon ONset Calculator Designed to Negate Carbon-Free Convention

by Lloyd Alter, Toronto on 08.27.08
Business & Politics

carbon onset calculator imageIf only politics really was about people looking at the issues and making intelligent choices. Instead we have Glenn Beck telling his audience to "Take part in our carbon ONset program. We are asking you to make just a few small sacrifices to completely wipe out any potential energy savings the Democrats claim credit for." He wants to add "70-million pounds of new C02 into the atmosphere to offset the Democratic Conventions offset program."

Interestingly, his onset calculator actually is probably a useful device- anyone looking at it will quickly realize that it will cost them a lot of money to onset the democratic convention, that with current energy prices making carbon dioxide is expensive. ::Glenn Beck via ::Think Progress

Of all the idiotic things to do... Destroying the planet for profit at least makes rational sense on some level. destroying it just to piss off others, while paying more to do so... I'm just baffled.

Wow. Glen's about as fresh and edgy as Nahional Lampoon.

Mr. Beck, and his type of brain and thinking, are a couple of the reasons why I left the Republican Party after 42 years of being a second generation fund raiser and committeeman.

jump to top Randall McConnell says:

I wonder if he realizes the aptness of the term "onset," as another hurricane steers toward New Orleans.

The cool thing is that, if you check his followups, he's failing utterly.

    Convention's offset:
    70m lbs.

    Beck's onset:
    3m lbs.

I plan on aborting more babies to make up for the babies that the anti-abortion groups have saved.

When you post anything about this level of stupidity please include the companies which support such drivel with their advertising dollars.

I'm not about to watch his program just to see who I want to boycott.

jump to top Bob Wallace says:

Colbert did a bit on his show last night where he was trying to offset the offset of the dem's convention. Life in this society is getting increasingly scary when there's no more difference between a satire of right-wing punditry and right-wing punditry itself. I am kind of wondering if Beck came up with this first and he was riffing off it, or if they thought of this separately. I kind of think it was two independent ideas.

You can view the whole episode here. It's toward the later third of the program:

one day people like this will end up in jail

    jump to top Rob says:

Yo, Glen. To offset your onset, I will be taking the Chinatown bus to Boston this weekend instead of driving. Figure with gas savings, wear-and-tear, and added productivity if I bring work to do, I will be putting $150-plus back in the column.

I WAS gonna drive. I was actually gonna rent, so that's another $200 you gotta waste.

    jump to top rob says:

People like this are the reason that I moved to Germany.

    jump to top Matt says:

On my drive through southern Mississippi this week a local radio station near Hattiesburg had a similar gimic: they had truck drivers calling in all morning saying how long they'd idled their big trucks in order to "onset" the DNC offsetting carbon. I'm really hoping actions like these are just pockets of immature ignorant people that happen to have a voice among other pockets of morons. I guess if it costs them diesel at $4.09/gallon, they're at least paying a little for their idiocy...

    jump to top ihavacavalier says:

I entered -99 and -9 for all fields and the applet accepted the submission. I wonder if the algorithm is stupid enough to actually subtract ONsets from Glenn's goal! Last count was 3,157,273.

Is there a way we could sue those idiots for some kind of manslaughter? Climate change is already killing people with worse storms and floods everywhere. Their antics shouldn't go unpunished. I'm even more mad after seeing today's headline about the Arctic ice.

    jump to top Juliette says:

    Juliette:

Any bonehead can express an opinion, especially since this is just bad satire. However, I think that Congress should investigate whether crimes have been committed the suppression of the findings of government-funded research, especially when we consider how plugged in various special interest lobbies are.

    jump to top rob says:

Well, if nothing else, at least they're failing. Looks like people aren't willing to cause destruction for no gain, at least when it stares them in the face so bluntly.
