Most every time we do post on the chemical Bisphenol A and how its apparent toxicity has reshaped the polycarbonate (Lexan) water bottle market, a commenter chimes in saying how wonderful their stainless steel Kleen Kanteen bottles are. Well, the market abhors a vacuum, even a partial one, so you can bet Kleen Kanteen (and Guyot Designs) won’t have the sandpit to play in all by themselves.

Bilt is one of the latest to join the game. This Vancouver, Canada based company have a wide range of stainless steel bottles in various sizes and colours. They sport a threaded collar and lid of food grade polypropylene plastic. The wide mouth versiosn are said to fit most backcountry water filters that were designed around the ubiquitous polycarbonate Nalgene bottle.

Bilt’s bottle itself is of type 304 stainless steel. The company says the inside of their bottles are “finished using an electrolyte charge and dolomitic sand blasting; unlike aluminum bottles that need an inner coating lacquer containing BPA.”

Additionally Bilt publish their values and code of conduct on their website, and if your outdoor activities are of the sweaty kind they also offer the classic bandanna in organic cotton.

Yes, nice. Were any of these made in China?

I'm drinking iced coffee and soy milk out of one of these bottles right now! The lids suck. You have to really crank them to get them tight enough to not leak. I've had my bottle leak multiple times on important stuff. And my arthritic hands don't like having to tighten and open screw top items! Otherwise, a nice bottle that can easily switch from hot coffee to cold water with a quick rinse. I wouldn't do that with plastic.

How many people are going to be upset when they find out that stainless steel contains chromium? Some stainless contains a little nickel too. Nothing wrong with either, but some are going to think otherwise. DB

Note: I made the mistake of putting a partially full bottle in the freezer over night, like I always did with the hard plastic bottles. The ice pushed the bottom out a bit so it hardly stands now (rounded bottom). Doesn't leak though.

Has anyone tried the BPA free Titan bottle? Check it out - it's got a clip built in. It's made from BPA free plastic. Cool.

I am looking for a stainless bottle that is not manufactured in China. I do not trust Chinese production.

Kleen Kanteen is made in China. I just called REI to ask - they confirmed.
I bought a Stainless Steel bottle from SubZero, and it rusted. RUSTED.

Stainless does not rust, ergo, it was not really stainless, and it was made in China also.
China still cannot be trusted for truth in advertising.

Just for clarification, stainless steal DOES rust! It is just harder to rust than other types of steal or metal.

If your tap water has chlorine or fluoride in it the bottle will rust. Both will rust stainless, along with several other things.

I am hoping to spread the word about this as I think stainless steal water bottles are fantastic. But many people have both chlorine and fluoride in their tap water!

Pics Canada has discovered an innovative way to provide consumers with an alternative to disposable plastic water bottles!

These stainless steel water bottles are eco-friendly (reusable/recyclable), free of Bisphenol-A (BPA) and allow for the consumer to design and decorate their own bottle with photos, artwork, embroidery and more.

FYI- Bilt is officially changing its name to Innate. I found a bunch of their bottles at closeout prices on ReusableBags.com (http://www.reusablebags.com/store/bilt-c-61.html)

I'm pretty sure all stainless steel water bottles are made in China, but I appreciate how open Bilt is with their materials information and how strict they are with their safety testing. California Proposition 65 is the strictest safety test in the country that I know of, and if these bottles exceed that than I feel safe using them.
