Coming Wave of Green IPOs?
Battery maker A123Systems wants to go public. After raising $123 million in venture funding, it now wants to raise $175 million more. Is it the start of a wave of green IPOs, or is the market too bad for that? A lot of green stuff is way more capital-intensive than the technology sector was in the late 1990s, so any parallel between the two should be taken with a grain of salt.

A123Systems Goals and Partners
"A123Systems is targeting three primary markets with its Li-ion technology: transportation, electric grid services (EGS), and portable power." They are already working with General Motors for the Chevy Volt and Think Global for the TH!NK city EV. The S1 papers also name a few other potential partners: MAGNA STEYR Fahrzeugtechnik AG & Co. KG, Delphi Corporation, and Better Place. Via A123Systems Files S-1 for IPO, TechCrunch

That's good. They'll have to be more transparent, and the extra capital might help them bring products to market quicker and invest more in R&D.

How do I invest in an IPO?

you might need to drop atleast 100k to get in on the IPO. You also might need to have at least 1million in equity to qualify (it depends on state too I think). Contact the company and ask which broker or firm they are listing the IPO with. (they sell the shares through an agency)

sounds like a good way to make some money.

everything hinges on the Volt though, and that's a project, which while it has almost unlimited upside, is wrought with a capital R-I-S-K.

See what happens when you ask a123 reps about the next gen solid state high density chemistry they parked at MIT? They're all dumping tons of money into antiquated liquid gel when ten times better is right around the corner! Why? Unless a123 already has plans to completely retool, they're playing interference gorilla while Duracell, Eveready and other battery leaders keep the chemistry we really need to knock out internal combustion in the back room, with a snide "dream on!" smile on their face.
