VW Goodness Over 1 Liter Car Offset by New 4.7 Liter SUV
by Lloyd Alter, Toronto on 07.12.08

Remember when Toyota compromised its green cred with the monster Tundra? Well, All teh netz are gaga over Mike's 1-Liter Supercar but nobody notices that they are also now producing this SUV designed to make a Hummer look like a pansy. Imagine the looks you will get when you drive down the street in this. Quiet inside, bulletproof, looks like it could transform into a robot at any second, what more could any rock star want? Oh, it's an armoured car? Never mind. ::Autocar via ::Notcot

Hey, it has video in the dashboard!

WOW... this article is low hitting ....
I think it's quite clear this is not a vehicle intended for public use....
Shameful Treehugger...
Not real sure but that looks like an armored truck ala Brinks in the States
You're going to give some of the Hummer owners ideas...DB
These armored vehicles have their place and this particular model is actually not bad for the environment.
I always wonder why armored cars are so friggin huge, don't you? We all know they aren't rolling around just full of cash and gold bricks. I bet they could probably be fine with the size of the 1L car (just add some bulletproof-ness and you're good to go). Or are they afraid that if it were the size of a small car someone would just pick it up and walk away with it?
For an armored car of that size and weight, I'm suprised it only has a 4.7L engine.
"VW Goodness Over 1 Liter Car Offset by New 4.7 Liter SUV" ... give them a break, it's an armored car.
are you joking or are you seriously saying that producing a niche market armored car is somehow bad for vw's green cred?? so because we're experiencing climate change people transporting large sums of money should ride a bike right huh?
Pretty sure not just any civilian can purchase, let alone use a vehicle like this. Don't you need a special permit or license for vehicles over so many HP (like super cars), weigh a certain amount, or have gun holes on the side doors?? If not, then I would be pretty happy if I was a terrorist.
Treehugger humor? So a 10 ton bank vault on wheels has similar styling to a modern-day Cadillac. That and too many treehuggers have seen the transformers movie, presumably with their kids.
bbk,
Humour should be well written and intentionally obvious.
ie starting the post with a "VW Goodness Over 1 Liter Car Offset by New 4.7 Liter Transformer" would have made it obvious that humour and not acerbity was the main gist of the post.
Andy,
As for the size/weight issue -- a smaller vehicle is unlikely to carry the equivalence in amour/structural strength as these larger vehicles. Nor the larger crew needed for the protection and/or movement of some deliveries.
These larger style of vehicles are much more difficult to tow/ lift, overturn or hide whereas smaller amoured vehicles can be moved by a regular tow/lift truck or overturned by a side strike from a unloaded school bus/ gravel truck, etc.
It seems that everyone is in agreement that this isn't going to be sold to many civilians. O.K. maybe 50cent will get one, but in general I think it's a good thing that VW is building an updated armored car. someone is going to build them
Part of the design of an armored car is to make it appear to be impenetrable. That way, criminals will think twice about trying to attack one.
Treehuggers, Please Please Please learn sarcasm!
This...
"Oh, it's an armoured car? Never mind"
was a punch line.
A real rant on VW would be something like why do they put 5 cylinder engines in their small cars in the US? They don't even hit 30MPG for the most part when all of their major competition from Japan, Korea and even THE BIG THREE do better!!!
Sarcasm... got it. Now if we could just all agree that sarcasm is annoying and generally counter-productive. People will end up either taking it out of context or just thinking the writer is cynical/uninformed. I wouldn't think that either of those would be desired outcomes.
