Fewer people than ever are camping in America. Whether it is video games, parents, competition or conservationists, numbers are down 11% since the mid-nineties and if it weren't for German and British tourists, "the parks would be desolate"

We have a lot of camping intentions....eventually, we will camp again!

You know, I'm sure it's true that numbers are down, but I can't hardly believe it. Every time I go to a National Part they are always packed. Granted, I live in Texas so I can't go very often, but even our state parks are loaded. I guess people that live close enough to go to state parks regularly are bored of them.

We love to go camping. Expensive? Your kidding right? Most places are less than $35 per night - in the US or in Canada. We camped for 4 nights in Lake Placid last month and it was $100 total for the site.

We camped as kids and continue to do it now.

jump to top Scott says:

The camping itself is not the expense. Remember, half the fun is getting there. And getting there is getting expensive.

jump to top Porter says:

I heard that numbers were rising this summer due to gas prices and people not being able to spend money on big vacations. When did camping get expensive?

jump to top Julie says:

Yes!
I went camping and river rafting for my bachelor party, my wife and I received camping gear for a wedding present and we even camped on our honeymoon.

A holiday that does not include using my own musclepower to move around (hiking, biking, canoeing etc. ), and does not include sleeping in a tent or the open air (prefably far away from official camping sites), is not a real holiday to me.

jump to top Giermo says:

I've been camping since I was 4, I learned zero impact camping in Scouts. I never go to campgrounds or parks, though. For me, camping involves getting off the trail a ways and isolated...

jump to top John says:

We *just* got our camping equpment last month, largely because a coworker suggested we go camping together (and vanpooling!). Another good reason is that I'm an amateur astronomer, which is part of the reason we're going. I'm looking for dark skies away from the city.

However, it would hardly be the first time I've ever been. I grew up in a remote mining town, and went camping as a kid on many occasions.

jump to top Ernie [TypeKey Profile Page] says:

not since we started farming.

I live out in the woods and i camp out when the electricity goes out. Try flushing the toilet with pool water. How about doing that in the wee hours in the morning.Or no water, toilet, fan and too hot to sleep for 38 hours. Can't eat much.

jump to top Judie says:

Camping expensive??? Not as much as a hotel and eating out! With three kids we camp all of the time. The parks we stop at alway's have other campers. My husband and I enjoy the quality time with the children. The children are also learning great scouting skills while having fun! We would not have it any other way.
