Travel by train - sure, I would love to. Sorry, can't afford it. Even when you factor in depreciation, insurance, and gas, travel by car is far cheaper in Canada thanks to our lovely VIA rail monopoly.
A 7 hour return trip to see my mother in hospice would cost us about $90 by car (700 km, 9.5 L/100km, gas at $1.35/L) and exactly $808.50 by train for myself, my wife and two children, one of whom would ride free. And that's a 'Value' fare. Oh, and let's not forget the $9.00 plasti-cheeze + wonder bread sandwiches available on board. No thanks.
