Pop Quiz: How Much More Gas Do Americans Use?
by Dominic Muren, Philadelphia, USA on 07.21.08

Answer: b) 190 gallons
The average American consumes approximately 500 gallons (1892 L) of motor gasoline per year, whereas the average Canadian consumes approximately 310 gallons (1173 L). Assuming burning one gallon of gasoline produces 20 pounds of CO2, the average American emits almost 2 tons more CO2 related to gasoline consumption than the average Canadian.

What I want to know is "Why!?" I don't think many Canadians outside the three largest cities are that eco-minded (The difference in culture between Vancouverites and Edmontonians is vast) and in many if not most places, you'd be hard-pressed to find an SUV that wasn't more practical than it was grossly unnecessary (like an Escalade is in San Francisco). Likewise, most Canadians don't have access to decent public transit.
The price of gas here however, is at least 20% higher however due to taxes, and that might put a little bit of a bite on consumption, but there's really not much of a cultural difference between Canadians and Americans from the Northern states.
Probably because the u.s. culture is enamored with the automobile and always has been.
Hmmm, they use more than I thought.
More suburbs in the US ? Larger cities means more congestion ? Traaffic jams?
Treehuggers, You should also ask, make a quiz, like the gasoline consumption, HOW MUCH CO2 is every person ON THE AVERAGE emitting through the electricity power generation, in each country, i.e. the
USA
CND
Australia
Germany
France
Switzerland
GB
India
China
Japan
all EU
etc. etc. etc.
Seph ... I can't tell you how much GHG is produced per person, but I do have a link to a chart that shows how much GHG is produced per State and Province, to make 1 kwh of electricity.
For example, Quebec produces 0.004 lbs /kwh of CO2, whereas Indiana produces 2.08 lbs/kwh or 520 times as much CO2 per kilowatt hour.
The USA average is 1.34 lbs/kwh of CO2 and the Canadian average is 0.099 lbs/kwh of CO2... the USA produces 13.5 times as much CO2 for every kwh they produce.
Given the large number of coal fired generating plants that China is bringing online every week, it would be interesting to see updated numbers for that country.
Here's the link to the chart:

did you take into account there are more liters in a Canadian gallon? So, that would mean a US person would use even more, right?
It's probably cause we check our tire pressure more often...
