Rocky Mountain Institute cofounder and Chief Scientist Amory Lovins has long argued that it's possible to protect the earth's climate at a profit.

By taking an integrated approach to climate protection, he explained Tuesday night during a talk in Aspen, CO, we can find cost-effective solutions that generate more solutions -- not more problems:

After his speech, Lovins squared off with Duke Energy CEO Jim Rogers and Camco International's Joel Swisher to discuss how we might lay a foundation for carbon-free prosperity. The panel was moderated by Oberlin College's David Orr.

Here are a few highlights:

I was privileged to know Amory Lovins briefly back in the 70's in London. He was as dedicated to the planet then as he is now. He's one of my heroes. We need to listen to this guy. He'd make a great Secretary of Energy in the next administration.

The profile of green in business definitely needs to be raised. Despite the messages in the media, I've discovered that green IT is not really landing. I interviewed 98 IT leaders recently:

* Only 12 of these people were really looking at green IT issues in their organization
* But 87 of them were well aware of the problem
* Of the 86 people not looking at green IT, 72 said they were too busy on other projects right now
* But of those 72, 48 thought that they should be
* And of those 48, only 6 said they were going to push harder to get it on the agenda

His book Natural Capitalism is perhaps the finest read on the subject to date. Just vast amounts of useful, well researched information. A classic.

I agree-- Amory Lovins for Secretary of Energy!
