Transportation Secretary Wants To Rob Peter to Pay Paul
by Lloyd Alter, Toronto on 07.29.08
Gasoline tax revenues are dropping quickly as gas sales continue to plummet because of prices and the recession. Secretary of Transportation Mary Peters says that the federal government may not be able to meet its commitments to states for road projects already under way.
Her solution? From the New York Times:
"The secretary, Mary E. Peters, said the short-term solution would be for the Highway Trust Fund's highway account to borrow money from the fund's mass transit account, a step that would balance the accounts as highway travel declines and use of mass transit increases. Both trends are being driven by the high price of gasoline and diesel fuel."
So if you don't have the money to fix the roads, you will take it from mass transit, which is the real solution to the problem. Only in America. ::New York Times via ::Grist image: Salon

She is obviously a turd.
That makes so sense at all.
I propose an increase in the gas tax to go towards funding mass transit.
We should definitley write her and let her know what a stupid idea this is and that we need more funds going to mass transit.

Should we expect anything more from the Bush Administration? Did you heard that an Alaskan Republican Senator was linked to illegal oil donations just this week? The GOP should be the Greedy Oil Party.
Wow, what a great idea. HA!
Here in NY our MTA is whining everyday of their financial woes and wants to raise subway & bus fares AGAIN after raising them just a few months back. The infrastructure needs tons of work and the government thinks that mass transit systems are the place to get money?
I expect very little in the way of "common sense" from the federal government. My expectations have just been lowered.
There needs to be an emergency audit which can tag which highway projects should be allowed, and which should be immediately canceled. New roads need to be stopped and effort put on keeping vital, high-use roads and interlinks in good condition. This is especially true because buses are using certain roads a lot more, and new roads to under- or un-built subdivisions won't get any use.
