Stair of the Week: Folded Stair by Kevin Low

Malaysian architect Kevin Low likes small projects; after working around the world on everything from master plans to high end condos, he still designs mailboxes. The folded stair was designed to bring natural daylight into the middle of a long, narrow property.

"An added design task was created: the stair had to seemingly float in the space of its bounding walls. The solution was found in perforated steel sheets, cut to width and folded to the dimensions of treads and risers for the provision of structural integrity.
The folded stair was suspended between the stair walls by mild steel pins located at the junctions where each tread met the top of their associated riser."

I love the transparency. ::Small Projects by Kevin Low via ::Daily Dose of Architecture

love it - but what about flatpack-ability? folded on-site? sold with a 400-lb metal brake?
I think it's a great idea but the look of them scares me. I have an irrational fear of falling and those stairs....being able to see through what I'm walking on??? I don't know. I most likely wouldn't venture to the 2nd floor.
Reminds me of walking over the steel grates in new york. it's a little scary at first but you get used to it.
