First 100% Organic Clothes Shop in Sao Paulo, Brazil
by Paula Alvarado, Buenos Aires on 07.22.08

Sao Paulo, Brazil's biggest city, has its own 100% organic clothes shop: Eden, which opened its doors last month. All garments that are sold in the store are produced with organic cotton and died with natural pigments, free of harmful chemical products.
The store is also decorated with furniture produced with wood from demolition and bamboo coming from the firm Bamcrus. More pictures and info on the brand and the origin of the organic fabrics in the extended.

Origin of Eden brand
The Eden clothing brand is a creation of YD Confections and Coexis, a company that works promoting organic cotton in Brazil by partnering with farmers organizations and cooperatives and with other actors of the manufacturing process to provide the fashion industry with responsible materials.
Coexis is responsible for a label called NOW (Natural Organic World), and says it has, "the first certified textile production chain in Latin America." It produces jeans and cotton woven fabrics.
The Eden store is located on 271 Harmonia St., Vila Madalena, Sao Paulo, Brazil.
Organic cotton
Why is organic cotton better than regular? From our Green Basics series: "Conventional cotton is one of the most chemically-dependent crops, sucking up 10 percent of all agricultural chemicals and 25 percent of insecticides on 3 percent of our arable land. That adds up to 1/3 of a pound of chemicals to produce enough cotton for a t-shirt, and 3/4 of a pound for a pair of jeans."
"And that's just not bad for the planet; 20,000 deaths occur each year from pesticide poisoning in developing countries, many of these from cotton farming, according to the World Health Organization (WHO)." Read more on organic cotton here: Green Basics: Organic Cotton.

WOW!
This shop looks awesome!
probably the most relaxed looking clothing store i have ever seen. see what happends when you incorporate nature and organic principles, you get good publicity and you create a welcoming atmosphere. that place is going to do killer business, anyone disagree. this is the type of style that will make the green economy appealing even to the skeptics.
That is so cool! First they replace their petrol requirements with sugar cane - derived ethanol, and now they've replaced their cotton imports with locally-grown cotton.
The world is thankful that Brazil's rainforest's are being cleared for a good cause.
Greenpeace anyone?
Don't you love how organic clothes just keep getting better and better? Beautiful shop!
I like the fact that these kinds of developments are being made in Brazil, but the rest of the world needs to take notice, too! It's not even a big problem for most of the developed countries in the world, yet nothing is being done. I would definitely wear these clothes in pride.
