A Picture is Worth....Dock Spiders Eat Fish?
by Lloyd Alter, Toronto on 07. 1.08

I have been around docks and big ugly dock spiders all my life and have never seen this, but there it is, on my dock right now. Do any of our readers have any experience with anything like this?

It looks like you've found the missing link between spiders and lobsters...
Yuk!
I've lived on the southeast coast my whole life and have had a pier and floating-dock since I can remember, but I've NEVER seen spiders like that!
Big ugly dock spiders?! Where do those monsters live? We just have fiddler crabs, which are smelly, but otherwise quite pleasant.
Thanks for the pic!
LA: Dorset, Ontario near Algonquin Park
I don't know about spiders and fish, but I was surprised when we brought home a homeless frog and it burped up a pile of bird feathers!
How big would you say spider/fish are?
LA: fish is about an inch and a half
When I was a kid I opened a boathouse door from inside, standing at the stern end of the boat. One of these jumped on my shoulder and ran inside the collar of my tee shirt and exited a few minutes later out from my belly area.
I shook for minutes afterward.
This is the stuff my nightmares are made of. I've overcome a few fears in my life, but killer-spiders-eating-my-flesh has not been one of them, sadly *shudder*
You're gonna need a bigger dock....
I was looking for some additional information on dock spiders, and here's a pretty thorough video. They can eat small fish, but their bites are pretty harmless. Enjoy the video...reminds me of those camel spiders found in the desert.

I remember seeing this as a kid at our dock at a lake in Eastern Ontario, Canada ...
Waterspiders can grow pretty darn big!

HOLY GEEZ THAT'S OUR DOCK?????
EWWWWWWWWWWWWW SERIOUSLY I AM NEVER GOING TO BE ABLE TO SWIM IN THIS LAKE AGAIN
I was up in Northern Ontario about a month ago and I saw one of these monsters run after i lifted up a boat that was upside down on the dock. It was pregnant....and huge. I got a shot of it on the dock, and it extends nearly the the width of a 2X4....that guys comment about needing a bigger dock made me laugh like hell
