CHILDREN'S BOOK Planet Earth Gets Well, author Madeline Kaplan, illustrated by Taillefer Long
As a green dad, I'm always on the lookout for informative books that can help to make a better world for my children's future. Ecolibris.net, who plants a tree for each book purchased, put together a nifty list of green book gifts for this past Fathers Day, but not since The Lorax by Dr. Seuss has a whimsically illustrated book come along aimed at sparking serious conversation with kids about the depleted environment they could inherit if each and every one of us don't continue to act.
Planet Earth Gets Well synopsis:
Kaplan's Planet Earth Gets Well is presented in a child-friendly format with full-color illustrations by Taillefer Long on every other page. The story revolves around Planet Earth feeling sick with the fever of global-warming, and its Mother Nature nurtures with insights about the human's little Earth plays with. For wee Planet Earth to take better care of himself, he must not let we humans do whatever we please, but rather should encourage us to take better care of him.
The relationship between the health of the planet and the people that live on it is clearly demonstrated for young readers, promoting this awareness as part of their earliest understanding of the world in which they live. Just as today's children are born into a high-tech society, they also inherit many serious environmental concerns. Planet Earth Gets Well promotes responsibility along with a positive message that parents will be able to pass onto their children at an early age in the effort to create an eco-friendly and proactive generation.

What is with the war-mongering McCain ad on Susty?
I guess McCain forgets Nixon's meeting with Chinese leaders or Reagan meeting with Soviet leaders.... McCain favors isolationism and bombing those we don't 'agree' with.
This is great. But why is it that we are more honest with our children than we are with other adults?
WALL-E contains a far more honest description of our world and where our current habits might lead us than anything you're likely to see in newspapers or other media for grown-ups.
Every well-made superhero movie reminds us that all actions, good or bad, have consequences, whether we know about them at the time or not, and so we should do what is right because it is right, secure in the knowledge that it will lead to a better world.
Heck, back in the day a lot of TV shows that both kids and adults watched did similar things- the Fresh Prince, Bewitched, the Cosby Show, and a lot of others all often had good morals and messages attached.
I wonder if this is a part of the reason many people choose a greener lifestyle after they have children: suddenly they are made to remember that there are goals worth having, ideals worth living up to, and pursuits bigger than themselves. Books and any other entertainment for children really means, at its best, a window on the world stripped of all the spin, lies, and other crap we adults use to cover up reality. In a sense, this is true even of fantasies; Narnia, Hogwarts, and Middle Earth have a lot more relevance to reality and how we should conduct ourselves than the No Spin Zone or Rock of Love 2 does.
Maybe if somebody sent THIS book to Bushey, he'd understand.
Thank you Kaffeneko. That is precisely why I wrote "Planet Earth Gets Well". It is because young minds are open and as yet untainted by spin and political disinformation.
Parents do become more environmentally conscious after the birth of their children for the same reason that they seek to prevent their children from inhaling secondhand smoke. It has been proven to pose a clear and present danger.
And now for Planet Earth. I am still "waiting to exhale".......
brilliant. it starts with the young ones because it'll be in THEIR lifetime in which they'll have to face the real effects of global warming. i'm more than sure that this generation, the teens coming of age, and the kids reading this book, will be the heroes that'll turn global warming's course. i applaud Madeline Kaplan.
Thank you Daisuke. It WILL be their lifetime and it WILL be their earth to save. Hopefully we can all set a good enough example and at the very least leave the next generation with a roadmap to a greener healthier planet.
All we can do is try -- and try we must. Today's toddlers are tomorrow's heroes!
