Renewable Energy Mobile Phone Charging Station to Debut at Glastonbury Festival
by Matthew McDermott, Brooklyn, NY on 06.18.08

At last year’s Glastonbury Festival, the folks from Got Wind in conjunction with phone service provider Orange showed us a tent-mounted wind-powered phone charger. This year they have got what promises to be a bigger solution for all you renewable energy phone charging needs. Enter stage right: the Recharge Pod.

GotWind describes their last product:
"At over 7 meters in height, the free standing recharge Pod is a self sufficient unit that supports a wind generator and solar panels and can charge up to 100 mobile phones per hour. It is estimated that the Orange recharge pod will charge thousands of mobile phones over the course of the 3 day festival, and the energy generated by the Orange recharge pod to be the equivalent of powering a DJ booth for Groove Armada for a marathon 88 hour set!"
Now if they could just hook one of these up to a laundry machine so you could wash your muddy clothes...kidding...kidding...

Wow!!!
That is definitely the dumbest idea ever. I challenge anyone to come up with anything worse. I tried really hard, but I just can't.
What is wrong with treehugger.com these days? Is there no editor on staff any more?
Yah, what a stupid way to promote your website that sells eco friendly rechargers- imagine a music festival filled with kids who cant live without the latest phones and you show them that they dont have to plug it into a wall or car to recharge it! Especially stupid when you consider they may actually call someone and tell them how they charged their phone on this useless contraption thus further promoting that stupid website.
Someone call Bill Reilly at FOX news- i bet liberals are behind this!
Hey Matthew, we posted on this a couple of days ago and have some more pics & details if you're interested.
@ Brian -- what's dumb about a tent that charges phones using renewables? The mates I know who are going to Glastonbury will be taking their phones anyway, so if Got Wind can show them that solar & wind work, what's the problem? Sure, it's hardly going to make any huge dents in carbon footprints of the festival-goers (if at all), but this is about education.
Hi,
It's anything but dumb, and Ben's got a good thing going there.
Apart from anything else it's probably greener than charging mobiles with idling cars for example.
Mobiles are useful even/especially where there's no mains power.

Unless I'm missing something very obvious, why are Brian and Anon. knocking this idea? And why are they visiting a site like treehugger if they think this is a stupid idea?!
It's an absolutely brilliant step forwards and the guys who designed it should be commended! For those who don't know, they have fossil fuel powered charging tents at Glasto anyway, so why on earth would you think one that does it without fossil fuels is a bad idea?! It's just the same as saying large scale wind farms and solar plants are a bad idea?!
It's people like you who prevent the human race from changing...
What is stupid is that it looks like out of 8 solar panels, only one will be able to face the sun properly at any given time. The rest will either be at a large angle, or facing directly away from it.
Who designs these things?
